Living With FASD: A Poem by Holly

We are excited to welcome Holly to our blog, who generously shared her very first poem with us, telling us about her “in-body” living experience with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Holly’s mom, Lisa, is a volunteer with PCMH, providing peer support to families in our FASD London Chapter. Thank you, Holly and Lisa, for sharing your wisdom and living experience with us and our PCMH family network!

FASD and Me

I don’t like change, I like routine,

A steady rhythm, calm and clean.
The world feels safer when it’s the same,
Too many twists can feel like a game.
When I’m angry, I’m Darth Vader’s might,
But when I’m happy, I shine with light.
A galaxy-wide life lives inside of me,
Shadows and stars in harmony.
It’s hard to make friends, but I try so hard,
I treasure each bond, I hold every card.
Though sometimes lonely, I still believe,
A GREAT friend is what I can always be.
Sometimes I don’t cooperate, it’s true,
Because my brain hears things differently than you.
I’m not being stubborn, I just need time,
To find my own rhythm, my own rhyme.
Sleeping is tricky, the nights feel long,
But helping others makes me strong.
My heart is big, my spirit free—
This is my journey: FASD and me.

OMG, Holly!…Your poem is so beautiful and so meaningful. I could read it over and over. What a wonderful talent you have! Keep writing more wonderful poems, save them all, and publish a special book of poetry for your FASD friends everywhere. xo

This little poem certainly shows how far Holly has come. With the enormous loving help from her mom Lisa she has been on a spectular journey educating family and people on FASD. To the little girl we couldn’t understand to the beautiful young lady she is today. I am proud to be her great aunt.
